Life as the foundation of Epicurean Philosophy

Why does this matter?

In the course of an explanation it's always better to have a foundation and to explicate it, rather than not have one or not present it.

For Epicureans today, understanding this point is an important issue because the original sources that may have existed are gone. We can however reconstruct this base from the remaining texts.

Only living humans need philosophy

What is the value of proper nutrition to a rock?

Why would a fish keep his word?

What kind of hierarchy of virtues do the deceased need?

These questions illustrate the two fundamental divisions that exist with regard to the need for a philosophical system. Firstly, there are the living and the non-living. And then there are living humans and living non-humans.

Non-living things, and this includes the deceased, neither need nor can hold any philosophy. They simply exist. It's against our intuitions to think like this, but we must remember that any values we believe that the non-living 'have', come from us.

There is a less drastic division between living humans and other living things, but it's a fundamental difference, nonetheless. Non-humans can have values, for instance they will seek food and try to protect their life with various methods. However, these things are done largely by instinct. A tiger won't have to decide what to eat, merely that it will hunt and eat the catch.

Living humans need guidance

The ultimate Goal (telos) of human life is to live happily (ataraxia and aponia). Therefore the ultimate purpose of Epicurean Philosophy is to help humans to achieve this state of painlessness.

In Epicurus' time, too, it was obvious that many people didn't understand what this purpose actually means, because we don't instinctively know what is good for us (unlike other animals).

So Epicurean Philosophy is the guide that teaches us how to live like a human.

Two postscripts

In Epicurean Philosophy the goal isn't and cannot be any proposed afterlife, because such things do not exist. The focus is in this life, here and now. The passed-on have no need for philosophy or Happiness.

There are no martyrs for Epicurus. The goal is to live happily, not die gloriously... Only in the most extreme of circumstances would an Epicurean choose death, and certainly not for Epicurean Philosophy itself.

Elämä Epikurolaisuuden perustana

Miksi tällä on väliä?

Mikä on oikeanlaisen ravinnon arvo kivelle?

Niinpä Epikurolaisen Filosofian perimmäinen tarkoitus on auttaa tämän tuskattomuuden saavuttamisessa.
